How to start and build an art collection

Practical guidance for new collectors: look closely, ask better questions and choose a first serious work.

Practical guidance for new collectors: look closely, ask better questions and choose a first serious work.

01How do you start a collection?+
Start with visits, not price lists. See works in person and return to artists who stay with you.
02A threshold for a first serious purchase?+
Between €15,000 and €20,000 one can find significant work. It is a reference, never a measure of quality or promise of return.
03What should you ask before buying?+
Ask about provenance, authenticity, medium, dimensions, condition, edition and terms. Request an invoice and certificate.
04Unique work or edition?+
Both can matter. For editions, examine size, proofs, signature, technique and place in the artist’s practice.
05How do you recognise an artist to follow?+
Look for continuity, exhibition quality, critical dialogue and development. The market is evidence, not a judge.
06Are art and investment the same?+
No. Value may rise or fall. First buy something you wish to live with; seek independent advice for financial decisions.
